SUMMARY: WHY DID THEY REJECT JESUS?

They felt insulted by his teaching

His kinsman felt that the one they grew up with could not be great.

They had their own preconceived ideas of God’s law.

They didn’t properly understand what the law said.

 They misapplied the law.

They misunderstood what Jesus was saying.

They placed their trust in men.

Greed: Matt 23:25-26, “Jesus said, ‘Inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.’”

Jealousy: Matt 27:17-18, “Pilate… knew it was out of envy that they had handed Jesus over to him.”

 God hardened their hearts

Love of praise of men. John 12:43 “They love the praise of men more than the praise of God.”

 Satan’s influence

Fear --John 12:42 “Because of the fear of the Pharisees they would not confess him.”

Mark 14:56-59 “Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree. Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: ‘We heard him say, 'I will destroy this man-made temple and in three days will build another, not made by man.’ Yet even then their testimony did not agree.”

DIVIDED OPINION:

John 7:12Some said, ‘He is a good man.’ Others replied, ‘No, he deceives the people.’”

John 7:40-43 “The multitude was divided”

John 9:16 “There was a division”

John 10:19-21 “There was a division among the Jews”

John 11:45, 46  “Many believed, some went away.”
