CHAPTER THREE

WHAT MADE AMERICA GREAT?

T

his study will show that America’s greatness is directly traceable to the Bible and to the God who gave it. America’s greatness proves God’s existence.

THE BIBLE

THE WORLD’S BEST SELLER:

Did you know that the Bible has never lost its place on the best selling list?[1] In fact, there is no book throughout all history that remotely compares with the popularity of the Bible. Parts of the Bible have been translated into more than 1,300 languages.[2] Over 100 million copies are sold each year.[3] Well over six billion portions of scripture have been printed. If each Bible printed were placed end to end, the solid line of Bibles would reach nearly 76,000 miles. There have been enough Bibles printed to make a solid ribbon of Bibles all the way around the world, not just once or twice, but three times. [4]

THIS BOOK LED IN THE FIGHT FOR INDIVIDUAL EQUALITY:

The idea of all people being equal did not originate with the women’s liberation movement, but with the Bible. The Bible lifted women from the roles of play things and servants, to a position of dignity. Even today, equality of the sexes does not exist beyond the influence of the Bible. For instance, Hinduism classifies women with cows, camels and goats. A Hindu proverb says, “A cow is sanctified but a woman is deprived.” In ancient Rome, a man could put his wife to death without a trial. Before the views of the Bible spread throughout the Roman world, Roman fathers also held the right to life and death over their children. Plato and Aristotle agreed that if a child became a bother to his parents, the child should be taken to a desert place and abandoned, or more simply, put to death. This view is widely practiced even today in non-Christian areas of the world. But when Christianity became the religion of the Roman Empire, the Emperor Constantine XE "Constantine"  decreed in 315 AD that parents must no longer kill their children.[5]

Notice what the Bible says about this popular subject of today. “There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Gal 3:28-29 NIV).

THE BIBLE LEADS THE FIGHT TO PROCLAIM THE VALUE OF CHILDREN’S LIVES

We are all familiar with the views of China which encourage the abandonment of undesired girl babies and the view that is prominent in our society which promotes the mass murders of our own innocent children by way of abortion. Notice what the Bible says regarding this subject. “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me” (Mark 9:37 NIV). “...whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven (Matt 18:4 NIV)”. “There are six things the LORD hates... hands that shed innocent blood...” (Prov 6:16-17 NIV).

THE BIBLE INSPIRES HUMANE TREATMENT

·        The first orphanages were operated by Christians.[6]

·        The first charity hospital on record was founded near Rome in 380 AD by a devout Christian. [7]

·        The first asylums for the insane were opened in Spain under Christian guidance. [8]

·        The first female nurses were Christians. Florence Nightingale, a devout Bible believer, transformed nursing care and pioneered in this profession for women.[9]

·        John Howard led in the fight against brutality in prisons. He found that it was a common practice to chop the ears of prisoners, to brutally beat and even brand inmates with hot irons. The character of this man is shown in his prayer, “Oh Lord, visit the prisoners and captives and make known your strength in my weakness.”[10]

·        In Cambridge Massachusetts, Dorothy Dix went into the prisons to teach the Bible. There she found many to be mentally deranged. The insane were locked in closets, cellars, and cages. Some were chained naked and beaten with rods. This frail school teacher demanded that the state legislators put the insane in hospitals. [11]

·        Sheldon Jackson, a Christian missionary, personally brought the reindeer from Siberia to Alaska by ship in 1891 and saved thousands of Alaskans from starvation.[12]

Jesus said, “I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me... I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me” (Matt 25:35-36, 40 NIV).

Our Lord’s influence on Americans has made them the most generous people on earth.

·        Germany, Japan, and to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts.

·        The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars into discouraged countries.

·        When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up.

·        When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them.

·        When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the Americans who hurry in to help.[13]

·        I write the following, October 5, 2001. President Bush has just announced that before we begin our war against Afghanistan, he wants to make sure that the citizens of that country are cared for so he has just signed a bill designating three hundred and twenty million dollars to help the people of that country. I want to ask, “Did the Moslems who destroyed our trade towers send a care package to America before they attacked us?” Have you ever heard of a country giving aid to a country before they waged war against it? Only the effects of Christianity could produce such an astonishing result.

THE BIBLE HAD IMMEASURABLE INFLUENCE ON SCHOOLS AND EDUCATION.

·        Christian grade schools are known to exist as far back as the Fourth Century. [14]

·        The great universities in Europe were started with the idea of teaching the Christian way as found in the Bible.[15]

·        The greatest scientists were students of the Bible; Galileo, Faraday, Pascal, Newton and others.[16]

·        The first American schools were founded primarily to teach Christianity from the Bible.[17]

·        The best read book in the Colonies, next to the Bible, was the “New England Primer” which could have been called the Christian’s Bible Primer. It had under A, In Adam’s fall we sin all,” and under Z, Zacheus did climb a tree, our Lord to see.[18]

·        One hundred eighty seven of the first 200 colleges in America were Christian, Bible teaching institutions[19] and were founded by some branch of the Christian Church -- Harvard, Yale, Princeton, William and Mary, Dartmouth, and the University of Michigan and the University of Pennsylvania,[20] just to name a few. Madelyn O’Hair may have gotten the Bible out of our public schools, but the fact is that there would be no public schools if it had not been for God and the Bible He gave to the Christians.

The Bible says, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding,” (Ps 111:10 NIV).

THE CHRISTIANS’ BIBLE HAS ITS EFFECT ON LAW AND ORDER.

The following statistics were published in the 1970’s. In Italy, it is estimated that there is not more than one Bible for every 10,000 people. In Rome, there is one murder for every 950 inhabitants. In England, a land of Bibles, there is only one murder for every 178,000 people. The same contrast can be seen with regard to illegitimate births and many other types of crime.[21] The sad part about these statistics is that between the 1970’s and the 2000’s most of England turned its back on God and, of course, crime has skyrocketed during these 30 years.

Judge Samuel Tatum of the juvenile court of Nashville, Tennessee, said, “I have tried 14,500 youngsters under the age of 17 for breaking the law. Of that number only 93 children were going to Sunday School at the time of their crime and trial, and of the 14,500 only in two instances did the fathers and mothers go to Sunday School and Church with their children.”[22]

THE BIBLE INFLUENCED GOVERNMENT.

By observing the books of Law in the Bible, the Jews advanced from a disorderly mob of slaves to become, under Solomon, the most glorious nation on earth. Many nations have risen or fallen according to their acceptance or rejection of the Bible. Consider the nation of England. The three greatest periods of England’s history came when national recognition was given to the Bible as God’s word. During the reign of Alfred the Great, who took a personal interest in having part of the Bible translated into English, England rose from barbarism, division and ignorance into a united, civilized nation. Queen Elizabeth called the Bible, “The jewel I love best.” She was the first to officially promote the circulation of the Bible and, for the first time, the Bible became a best seller and England became a world power for the very first time. During the  reign of Queen Victoria, the British Empire climbed to its greatest height in world influence, power and territory. When asked by a foreign prince the secret of her country’s greatness, she replied, “The Bible, my lord, the Bible is the secret of our greatness.”[23]

The Bible says, “Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful” (Josh 1:8 NIV).

THE BIBLE WAS THE TEXT BOOK FOR EARLY AMERICA.

The Bible was not only the text book for public schools, but it was also the text book for the highest circles of government. Our foundation freedoms are based upon the Bible. One of the first acts of Congress was to approve the printing of a large edition of the Bible,[24] and to officially recommend that every citizen read this book.[25]

THE ROOTS OF AMERICAN DEMOCRATIC LAW ARE IN THE BIBLE.

The Declaration  of Independence  says, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they were endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” Are these truths really self-evident? Let’s analyze this portion of the Declaration.

ALL MEN ARE CREATED... Is it self-evident that there is a Creator? In the Declaration, the Creator is referred to four times, “Created equal,” “Their Creator,” “God entitles them,” and “with firm reliance on the protection of divine providence”. It is self-evident that there is a Creator for... “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands” (Ps 19:1 NIV). “For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made...” (Rom 1:20 NIV).

ALL MEN ARE CREATED... Is it self-evident that men are created? When we study the intricate design of man’s body and mind, we are forced to conclude that man’s creation is indeed self-evident, for every design requires a designer. We are compelled to confess with David, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well” (Ps 139:14 NIV).

ALL MEN CREATED EQUAL... Is it self-evident that all men are equal? No! Societies that have not been influenced by the Bible have no equality. However the Bible says, “God does not show favoritism but accepts men from every nation who fear him and do what is right” (Acts 10:34,35 NIV). And, “For God so loved the world...” (John 3:16 NIV). Here we see that the Bible is the author of the idea of men being equal.

LIFE: Is it self-evident that man has the right to life? No! Hitler didn’t draw that conclusion. He took the lives of 6,000,000 innocent Jews.[26] Our Supreme Court  doesn’t draw that conclusion. They have taken, by way of abortion, over 45 million[27] lives of innocent babies. But the Bible says, “You shall not murder” (Ex 20:13 NIV). Thus we see that the Bible is the true author of the right to life.

LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS

Is it self-evident that man has the right to liberty and happiness? No! The communist world enslaves their people, plunders their property and destroys their hopes for happiness. But the Bibles says, “Proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants” (Lev 25:10 NIV). And, “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” (Phil 4:4 NIV).

By examining the Declaration of Independence and noting the repeated references to God, we are forced to the conclusion that by the expression “SELF-EVIDENT”, our founding fathers simply meant, WE DERIVE THESE TRUTHS FROM THE BIBLE. From the Bible we learn that the Creator made all men equal. From the Bible we learn that man has the right of life. From the Bible we learn that man has the right to liberty and the pursuit of happiness. These principles are not self-evident, they are Bible-evident, and they draw us to the undeniable conclusion that our government was established on Biblical principles. THIS IS SELF-EVIDENT!

Further, the Declaration says that governments have no right to exist except for the protection of the above stated Biblical principles. It says, “Whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it and to institute a new government... it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government...” Notice it says, “iT is their duty, to throw off such government!”

As stated earlier, the roots of American Democratic law are in the Bible. The ten commandments are specifically named in 47 of our states’ constitutions.[28]

QUOTES FROM THE BIBLE ARE FOUND ON AMERICA’S MOST RESPECTED MONUMENTS.

THE LIBERTY BELL has this inscription from Leviticus 25:19, “Proclaim liberty throughout all the land.”

ARLINGTON CEMETERY has thousands of graves. I would estimate that of these graves, which mark the burial spot of America’s greatest young men and women, 99% are marked with the cross of Christianity.

ALL OUR MONEY has this inscription: “In God We Trust.”[29]

No other place in our nation are there so many inscriptions honoring God as there are in our United States Capital.

IN THE US CAPITAL BUILDING, there is a prayer window with the picture of George Washington  kneeling in prayer. The words, “This Nation Under God,” are in the glass above him, and the words “Preserve Me O God For In Thee Do I Put My Trust (Psalm 16:1), surrounds the kneeling figure of Washington.

IN THE SENATE: Opposite the President of the Senate is the phrase, “In God We Trust.”

IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, behind the Speaker of the house, are inscribed in large letters the phrase, “In God We Trust.”

IN THE SUPREME COURT, above the head of the Chief Justice, are the Ten Commandments. Moses is included among the great lawgivers in the marble sculpture group on the east front. The crier who opens each session closes with the words, “God save the United States and the Honorable Court.”

THE WASHINGTON MONUMENT: On the metal cap on the top of the Washington XE "Washington"  Monument is engraved these words, “Praise be to God.” Lining the walls of the stairwell are such biblical phrases as, “Search the Scriptures,” “Holiness to the Lord,” “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.”

THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS: Many quotations from the Scripture are found within the walls of the Library of Congress. “What doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly and love mercy and walk humbly with thy God” (Micah 6:8). “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament showeth His handiwork” (Psalm 19:1). “The light shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehendeth it not” (John 1:5).

THE LINCOLN MEMORIAL has engraved in its walls, “...That this Nation, under God...” Lincoln’s second inaugural address is inscribed in which he mentions “God,” the “Bible,” “providence,” “The Almighty,” and “divine attributes.” The address continues with these words, “As was said 3,000 years ago, so it still must be said, ‘Judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.’”

THE JEFFERSON MEMORIAL has this quote from Jefferson, “God who gave us life gave us liberty. Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed a conviction that these liberties are the gift of God? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just, that his justice cannot sleep forever.”[30]

THE BIBLE PRODUCES GREATER HEALTH

“He said, ‘If you listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the LORD, who heals you’” (Ex 15:26 NIV).

What a promise! Just think, if the Jews, or even you and I today, keep God’s commands, he promises to reward us with better health. Doctor S.I. McMillion once wrote a book in which he listed disease after disease that we would not have today if we had kept the commands of God.

The Prevention Magazine says that more than 300 studies confirm that people of faith...

·        are healthier and less likely to die prematurely from any cause.

·        recover faster from physical and mental illness.

·        recover faster from surgery and addiction.

A study at the California Public Health Foundation in Berkely followed 5,000 people for 28 years and found that women who went to church at least once a week had...

·        one third less risk of dying prematurely than women who did not attend church.

Researchers in Johns Hopkins Hospital found that...

·        weekly churchgoers died 50 percent less frequently from heart disease.

Dr. Harold Koenig of Duke University’s Center for the Study of Religion/Spirituality and Health conducted 50 studies of the relationship between health and faith. Among his findings are these:

·        People with strong religious faith who suffer from physical illness have significantly better health outcomes than less religious people.

·        People who attend services regularly have stronger immune systems.

·        Religion helps cope with stress.

·        Religious faith seems to protect older people from cancer and heart disease.

·        Religious patients are three times less likely to die following heart surgery than their non-religious counterparts.

·        Religious patients recover from hip and fractures and open-heart surgeries better than non-religious patients.[31]

THE BIBLE PRODUCED THE LARGEST ORGANIZATION ON EARTH. (2000)

Christians                1,974,181,000

Moslems                  1,155,109,000

Chinese religions       381,632,000

Buddhists                    236,270,000[32]

THE BIBLE IS THE GREATEST SINGLE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE GREAT MASTERPIECES  OF art, music, literature, science, medicine, and the transformation of character.

WHY SHOULD AMERICA BE A CHRISTIAN NATION?

1. If the God of the Bible is real then we MUST honor Him. If we don’t, He says we WILL suffer terrible consequences.

2. America is the greatest nation in all history. History clearly affirms that America was built on Biblical principles. The old saying is, “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.” Why would anyone want to destroy a track record like ours, especially when the experiments of godless governments, all around the world, have ended in such horrible disasters?

3. The base of our government is God and His Bible. To separate God from the government and the Bible from our government’s base would require that we start all over again and create another government.

4. Christianity always has and always will make its environment better, never worse. Only twisted minds like those who crucified Jesus would choose liars over those who would die for the truth; thieves over those who encourage their people to give at least ten percent of their income to help others; adulterers over those who are content to live their whole lives with one mate; people who’s mouths are filled with curses over those who are constantly singing praises to God; those who change the rules at any time that fits their own needs over those who are content with a consistent rule; those who would force their will on others over those who would invite others into their community to share the bounty, and still not even insist that they accept their religious convictions.
