CHAPTER SEVEN
THE MULTITUDE
THE
MULTITUDE: John 6: 5-15
“When Jesus looked up
and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said… ‘Have the people sit
down.’ There was plenty of grass in that place, and the men sat down, about
five thousand
of them… Jesus then took the loaves,
gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they
wanted. He did the same with the fish. After the people saw the miraculous
sign that Jesus did, they began to say, ‘Surely
this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.’”
THE
CROWD: John 6:30-66
“So they asked him,
‘What miraculous sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you…
Our forefathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written: ‘He gave them
bread from heaven to eat’… ‘Sir,’ they said, ‘from now on give us this
bread.’… At this the Jews began to grumble about him… ‘Is
this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can
he now say, ‘I came down from heaven?’
… Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, ‘How can this man
give us his flesh to eat?’… On hearing it, many of his disciples said, ‘This
is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?’…
From this time many of
his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.”
THE
CROWD:
John 7:12 “Among the crowds there was
widespread whispering about him. Some said, ‘He
is a good man.’
Others replied, ‘No,
he deceives the people.’”
John 7:14, 15 “Not until halfway through the
Feast did Jesus go up to the temple courts and begin to teach. The Jews were
amazed and asked, ‘How
did this man get such learning without having studied?’”
John 7:20 “‘You
are demon-possessed,’ the crowd
answered.”
John 7:31 “Still,
many in the crowd put
their faith in him. They said, ‘When
the Christ comes, will he do more miraculous signs than this man?’”
John 7:40 “On hearing his words, some of the
people said, ‘Surely
this man is the Prophet.’
John 7:41 Others said, ‘He
is the Christ.’ Still others asked, ‘How
can the Christ come from Galilee?’”
John 7:43 “Thus
the people were divided
because of Jesus.”
John 8:30 “Even as he spoke,
many put their faith in
him.”
John 8:48 “The Jews answered him, ‘Aren't we
right in saying that
you are a Samaritan and
demon-possessed?’”
John 8:52 “…at this the Jews exclaimed; ‘Now
we know that you are demon-possessed!’”
John 8:59 “…at this,
they picked up stones to
stone him, but Jesus hid himself,
slipping away from the temple grounds.”
THE JEWS:
John 10:19-21 & 10:31-33
“At these words
the Jews were again
divided. Many of them said, ‘He
is demon-possessed and raving mad.
Why listen to him?’ But others said, ‘These
are not the sayings of a man possessed by a demon. Can a demon open the eyes
of the blind?’ Again the Jews picked
up stones to stone him but Jesus said to them, ‘I have shown you many great
miracles from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?’ ‘We
are not stoning you for any of these,’ replied the Jews, ‘but for blasphemy,
because you, a mere man, claim to be God.’”
JEWS AT THE RAISING OF
LAZARUS:
John 11:43-45
“When he had said this,
Jesus called in a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come out!’ The dead man came out,
his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his
face. Jesus said to them, ‘Take off the grave clothes and let him go.’
Therefore many of
the Jews who had come to visit Mary,
and had seen what Jesus did,
put their faith in him.”
THE
MULTITUDE TESTIFIED,
“Surely this is the
Prophet who is to come into the world.” “How can he now say, 'I came down
from heaven?” “He
is a good man.”
“He deceives the people.” “How did this man get such learning without having
studied?” “You are demon-possessed.” “When the Christ comes, will he do more
miraculous signs than this man?” “Surely this man is the Prophet.” “He is
the Christ.” “How can the Christ come from Galilee?” “You are a Samaritan
and demon-possessed?” “Now we know that you are demon-possessed!”
“He is
demon-possessed and raving mad.” “These are not the sayings of a man
possessed by a demon.” “Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?” “We are not
stoning you for any of these,” replied the Jews, “but for blasphemy, because
you, a mere man, claim to be God.”
JESUS’ BROTHERS: John 7:3-5
“Jesus' brothers said
to him, ‘You ought to leave here and go to Judea, so that your disciples may
see the miracles you do. No one who wants to become a public figure acts in
secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.’ For
even his own
brothers did not believe in him.”
