CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

SUMMARY-WAR OF 1812

“How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them!” Psalms 139:17.

Notice the providential hand of God.

The American infantry was small and unprepared.

The British military was large and the best prepared army in the world.

· Despite being a tiny wilderness town with no dry lumber, no sawmills, no iron works, no cannons, no cloth shops to make sails, no real roads, located 150-250 miles from all supplies, and being a horrible winter, God intervened; and in only eight months six warships were completed at Erie.

· With a navy made up of a few sailors, a few soldiers, a few marines, and a few militia from every state, God allowed Perry to build a formidable navy in a few short months.

· Despite the fact that the ships were penned up in the Erie harbor by the British warships, God miraculously caused the British ships to leave and stay away until all six American ships had escaped into the lake.

· Despite the fact that one fourth of the sailors were deathly sick and that the flagship lost 80 percent of its crew, God allowed them to have victory.

· Despite the fact that Perry only had short-range cannons and had to sail right into the British cannon barrage for nearly one half hour, God allowed him to sail on until he got close enough to fire on the British.

· God providentially allowed the British ships to ram each other and become locked together at just the right time to allow Perry to rake their sides with cannonballs.

· Despite the fact that Great Britain had never lost a fleet of ships before, God allowed the tiny American navy to conquer them.

· As the flames broke through the roof of the capital building, thunder rolled, indicating God’s displeasure.

· A hurricane and tornado extinguished much of the burning buildings in the city of Washington and raised havoc on the British infantry.

· God allowed one single shot to bring down General Ross and basically stop the British troops in their tracks as they marched on their way to destroy Baltimore.

· Though Great Britain unleashed its greatest strength in 25 hours of relentless cannonade of Fort McHenry, they were unable to conquer the fort.

· God providentially guarded the quarter million pounds of powder and prevented the one bomb that reached the storehouse from exploding.

· Due to the fact that the British soldiers were unable to conquer this one fort, they set sail and quit.

· Andrew Jackson had no real army; his 4,000 untrained men faced 10,000 of the best soldiers in the world.

· The British commander was the most popular commander in the British army.

· Andrew Jackson had a bullet between his lung and heart and was plagued with painful dysentery.

· God intervened with a swift current that carried many of the British soldiers away from the action.

· God had previously prevented the 25 hours of continuous bombardment from the British cannons to destroy Fort  McHenry, but now he allowed American cannons to kill 100 British soldiers with one shot.

· God enabled the American guns to destroy the high command in only 20 minutes.

· God allowed the British lines to keep coming to the ditch where they could be mowed down by the Americans.

· God allowed Jackson’s rag tag army of 4,000 to put to flight an army of 10,000 skilled soldiers.

· God enabled the American people to take 2,000 British soldiers while losing only 13 of their own men.

· God intervened to bring this mighty conflict to an end in only two hours of battle.
