Chapter Eight

CALL ON NAME

Rom 10:13 KJV “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Call: Strong: invoke (ask solemnly) for aid

Thayer: to appeal (make an urgent request)

It is interesting to me to note the various things that people point to as their conversion experience.

Some say their moment of conversion was at:

  • A vision they claim to have seen

  • The moment they believed

  • The moment they called on the name of the Lord

  • The moment they prayed

  • The moment they repented

Notice the chronology of Saul’s conversion:

VISION

· Acts 22:6 KJV “And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me.” Paul speaks of this event when talking to Agrippa, and calls it a vision. “Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision.” (Acts 26:19 KJV)

QUESTION: Did Paul become a Christian at the point of his seeing the vision?

BELIEVING IN JESUS; CALLING ON THE NAME OF THE LORD

· Acts 9:6 KJV “And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.”

QUESTION: Did Saul become a Christian at the point of his believing in Jesus?

QUESTION: Did Saul become a Christian at the point of his calling Jesus Lord?

QUESTION:  What was Saul told, in the city, to do?

PRAYER:

Acts 9:11 KJV “And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the street which is called Straight, and inquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul, of Tarsus: for, behold, he prayeth...”

QUESTION: Did Saul become a Christian at the point of his prayer?

REPENTANCE:

Acts 9: 9 KJV “And he was three days without sight, and neither did eat nor drink.” The facts that he wanted to obey Jesus, he did obey Jesus immediately by going and waiting, that he fasted for three days, and that his life was forever changed after that event, all show that Saul truly did repent.

QUESTION: Did Saul become a Christian at the point of his repentance?

BAPTISM:

Acts 22:16 KJV “And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.”

Notice the things that played a part in Saul’s conversion.

· A vision

· Believing

· Repenting

· Praying

Notice that all the above were bringing him closer to salvation. Notice that after experiencing all the above his sins had not yet been taken away. Notice also that the final step to having his sins washed away was baptism.

QUESTION: In Acts 9:6 Jesus informed Saul that in the city he would be told what he must do. In Acts 22:16 Saul is told to do something. What was Saul told to do?

CALLING ON THE NAME OF THE LORD

Matt 7:21 KJV “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.”
