Chapter Seven
BAPTISM
FOR REMISSION OF SINS
Acts 2:38 KJV “Then Peter said unto
them, Repent,
and be baptized
every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ
for the remission of sins,
and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”
The following are the
only verses in the Bible that speak of remission of sins.
J JOHN’S
BAPTISM WAS FOR REMISSION OF SINS
· Mark
1:4 KJV “John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of
repentance for the
remission of sins.”
· Luke
3:3 KJV “And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the
baptism of repentance
for the remission of
sins.”
JESUS’ BLOOD WAS SHED FOR REMISSION OF SINS
Matt 26:28 KJV “For this is my blood of the
new testament, which is shed for many
for the remission of sins.”
JESUS’
SACRIFICE WAS ALSO FOR THE SINS OF THOSE WHO CAME BEFORE JESUS
Rom 3:25 KJV “Whom God hath set forth to be
a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness
for the remission
of sins that are past, through the
forbearance of God.”
ONCE THE REMISSION TAKES
PLACE NO MORE SACRIFICE IS NEEDED
Heb 10:18 KJV “Now where
remission of
these is, there is no more offering for
sin.”
BAPTISM, DURING THE
CHURCH AGE, IS FOR THE REMISSION OF SINS.
Acts 2:38 KJV “Then Peter said unto them,
Repent,
and be baptized
every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ
for the remission of sins,
and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”
Remission of sins is
always (only) mentioned in conjunction with Christ’s sacrifice or baptism.
REMISSION: Strong's
NT:859 “from NT:863;
freedom;
(figuratively)
pardon: KJV-deliverance,
forgiveness,
liberty,
remission.
REMISSION: Thayer's
Greek Lexicon
1)
release from bondage
or imprisonment
2)
forgiveness
or pardon,
of sins (letting them go
AS IF THEY HAD NEVER BEEN
COMMITTED), remission (forgiveness)
of the penalty
Notice the similarity
between Matt 26:28 and Acts 2:38.
· Matt
26:28 KJV “For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed FOR MANY
FOR THE REMISSION
OF SINS.”
· Acts
2:38 KJV “Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized EVERY ONE...FOR
THE REMISSION OF SINS.”
Jesus’ blood was shed
“for,” in order to
provide
remission of sins. Baptism is to be performed “for,” in order to
receive
remission of sins. Baptism does not nullify grace because it does not earn
remission; it simply is that act where we receive the free gift of
remission. If baptism is because our sins were forgiven before we were
baptized, then Jesus’ blood was shed because we had forgiveness before His
blood was shed. The verses use the exact same words. What we apply to
baptism must be applied to Jesus’ blood.
BELIEF UNTO SALVATION:
Rom
10:9-10 KJV “That if thou shalt
confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that
God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart
man believeth unto
righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made
unto
salvation.”
Notice verses that use
unto.
· 1
Peter 1:5 KJV “Who are kept by the power of God through
faith
unto salvation
ready to be revealed in the last time”.
· Acts
20:21 KJV “Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks,
repentance
toward God,
and faith
toward our Lord
Jesus Christ.”
· Rom
10:10 KJV “For with the heart man
believeth
unto righteousness...”
· Rom
10:10 KJV “... with the mouth
confession
is made
unto salvation.”
· II
Cor. 7:10 KJV; “Confession
is made
unto salvation.”
Unto means
toward
or
in the direction of. The Bible
teaches that faith, repentance and confession take us
toward
or in the
direction of salvation. Faith,
repentance and confession are necessary for a person to receive salvation.
Notice verses that use
into.
· Gal
3:27 KJV “For as many of you as have been
baptized
into Christ
have put on Christ.”
· 1
Cor 12:13 KJV “For by one Spirit are we all
baptized
into one body,
whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free...”
· Rom
6:4 KJV “Therefore we are buried with Him by
baptism
into death:
that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father,
even so we also should walk in
newness of life.”
Into means
going from the outside of something to the inside of something.
The Bible teaches us that baptism is the point at which we enter
into
the saved state (receive
Christ),
we receive the benefits of His
death
(His shed blood) and we receive a
new life.
Notice also that in the same context, of
baptism, Paul tells us that at the point of obeying the requirement of
baptism, a person is set free from sin. Rom 6:17-18 KJV “But God be thanked,
that ye were the servants of sin, but
ye have obeyed
from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. (baptism
mentioned above) 18 Being
then
(at that point)
made free from sin, ye became the
servants of righteousness.”
Some people quote Rom
10:9, 10 to show that “faith only” saves, but ignore the previous verses
(Rom 6:3, 4) which plainly show that baptism plays a part in salvation.
OBEY
THE GOSPEL
The Bible is clear that
we must obey the Gospel in order to be saved.
1 Peter 4:17 “For it is
time for judgment to begin with the family of God; and if it begins with us,
what will the outcome be for those who do not
obey the gospel
of God?”
2 Thess 1:8-9 “He will
punish those who do not know God and do not
obey the gospel
of our Lord Jesus.”
The question must be
asked, “What is the Gospel?”
1 Cor 15:1-4 “I want to
remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which
you received
and on which you
have taken your stand. By this
gospel
you are saved,
if you hold firmly to the word
I preached
to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.
“For what I received I
passed on to you as of first importance: that
Christ died
for our sins according to the Scriptures, that
He was buried,
that He was raised
on the third day according to the Scriptures.”
Here we find that the
gospel is something...
That which was preached
was...
· Christ’s
death.
· Christ’s
burial.
· Christ’s
resurrection.
The death, burial and
resurrection are the things that can be received, that we can stand on and
be saved by.
The question that we
need to ask is, how do we obey it. The gospel is the death, burial and
resurrection. The death burial and resurrection of Christ are facts not
commands. We obey commands but not facts. How do we obey the gospel?
Rom 6:17-18 “But thanks
be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin,
you
wholeheartedly
obeyed the
form
of teaching to which you were entrusted.
You have been set free
from sin and have become slaves to
righteousness.”
The passage tells us
that when we obey the form of teaching we are set free from sin. The word
form
means
likeness
or pattern.
When we obey a likeness or pattern of the gospel we are set free from sin.
Notice that the verses we are considering are Rom 6:17,18. Just above these
verses, in the same chapter-context Paul explains how we obey the pattern of
the death burial and resurrection. Notice: Rom 6:4-5 “We were therefore
buried
with Him through
baptism into
death
in order that, just
as
Christ was raised
from the dead
through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. 5 If we have
been united with Him
like
this in His death,
we will certainly also be united with him in His
resurrection.”
The way we obey the
gospel is by crucifying our sinful selves in the likeness of His
crucifixion. Dying to our old way of life in the pattern of Christ’s death,
being buried in baptism in the form of His burial and rising from baptism in
the likeness of His resurrection.
2 Thess 1:8-9 “He will punish
those who do not know God and
do not obey the gospel
of our Lord Jesus.”
