10 Like before flood?

CHAPTER TEN

WHAT WAS IT LIKE BEFORE THE GENESIS FLOOD ?

Perhaps the most unique feature of the first world was the bubble of water vapor that completely surrounded the earth and hung suspended at the outer edge of our atmosphere. We can read of this bubble in Genes 1:7,8 where we find, “God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so. God called the expanse sky.” This water bubble above our atmosphere produced some very interesting results. We have already observed that this vapor bubble would have been the chief source of water for the destruction of the first world. Now let us consider other effects it would have had on the world.

EXTREME AGE OF PEOPLE AND SIZE OF ANIMALS: In Genesis 5:5-31 we learn that the average life span in those days was about 900 years. The pre-flood vapor barrier filtered out the ultraviolet and cosmic rays of the sun which cause aging.[1] This bubble also had a direct effect on the size of animals. In Genesis 6:4 we find, “There were giants in the earth in those days....” KJV The question is often asked, “Where do dinosaurs XE "dinosaurs"  fit into the Bible picture?” In answer to this question, reptiles are not limited to a certain sized body as most animals. The availability of food and proper temperature are the two primary requirements for speedy reptile growth. A crocodile in captivity that has an abundance of food can grow four times as fast and reach maturity in half the time it takes for crocodiles in the wild.[2] Reptiles continue to grow as long as they are alive.[3] If a lizard lived to be a thousand years old, and continue to grow as long as it lived, what would it be like? Exactly, just like a dinosaur. By the way, the word dinosaur means “terrible lizard.”[4] We must conclude then, that due to the perfect temperature, the abundance of food and protection from the rays of the sun that were present before the Genesis flood, reptiles were able to grow to enormous sizes. During the flood, the larger dinosaurs died and the ones that remain today are unable to live long enough to grow to the enormous size of their ancestors.

We know that men and dinosaurs lived on the earth at the same time because, first, the Bible says that they were both created on the same day, Genesis 1:24-31. Second, because there are Indian drawings of dinosaurs in Arizona. These drawings were made hundreds of years ago, yet they depict these dinosaurs, almost exactly, as modern fossil bone discoveries show them to be.[5] The Indians could not have drawn animals that they had never seen, therefore, both dinosaur and Indian must have lived at the same time. Third, in the Paluz river basin near Glen Rose, Texas, there are giant fossilized dinosaur tracks[6] that come out from under the river bank and go across to the other side of the river. When a portion of the river bank was dug away, it was found that the prints continued under the bank.[7] It should also be noted that huge fossilized human footprints are also found in the same area as the dinosaur tracks and actually cross over these tracks.[8] This proves that both man and dinosaur were on the earth at the same time.

Archaeology has produced evidence that, at one time, some birds were ten feet tall,[9] had wing spans of twenty-five feet and laid eggs as large as eleven inches in diameter. Butterflies have also been found that had a twenty inch wing span.[10] The water vapor bubble explains how man could have lived so long and how some of the animals could have grown to such a tremendous size.

LITTLE TEMPERATURE CHANGE: Another effect the water vapor bubble would have had on the earth is that it would have provided an almost universal temperature.[11] Heat from the sun would have been absorbed by the water and would have been equally distributed around the world. There is an abundance of proof that at one time areas near both the North and South poles were tropical forests. The writer of this book has a friend by the name of Charles Felex, who once worked on the northern slopes of Alaska. From these slopes Mr. Felex took several impressive pictures of large forests of fallen trees, which probably grew many centuries ago. The climate in that region today is so frigid that no trees can live. Admiral Richard Bird also found a petrified forest one hundred miles from the South Pole in 1933.[12] We all know that oil is the result of decayed vegetation.[13] The abundance of oil in these regions is also evidence that the areas were at one time filled with plant and animal life. The remains of sixty-six different species of animals,[14] including many mammoths, (pre-historic elephants) have been discovered in the ice of Siberia and Alaska. Some of these large animals have been taken from the ice in almost perfect condition. For example, a long haired elephant is now in a museum in Russia which was almost perfect when it was taken from the ice. The food that the elephant had just eaten was still in its stomach.[15] Steaks from ancient mammoths have been served in restaurants, in Alaska, for many years.[16] All this is evidence that the North and South poles were at one time tropical. When God allowed the water bubble to collapse, in the days of Noah, it suddenly exposed the North and South poles to the frigid air of space, and the animals were frozen solid in a matter of minutes. This truth is evident because the frozen animals show no deterioration. These animals were “quick frozen”. It was after the flood that the very first mention of cold is recorded (Genesis 8:22).

NO WIND: Temperature change causes wind.[17] Since the first world had almost the same temperature from the poles to the equator, and from noon to midnight, there would have been very little or no wind. With no wind, of course, we can also rule out all tornadoes and hurricanes. The first mention of wind comes AFTER the flood (Genesis 8:11).

NO RAIN: Before the flood the earth was watered by a mist that came up from the ground at night (Genesis 2:5, 6 KJV). The water vapor bubble would have acted much like a terrarium which traps moisture inside. The first mention of rain descending on the earth is AT the flood (Genesis 7:4), and the first rainbow is mentioned AFTER the flood (Genesis 9:13). With no rain we can rule out all flooding. The very first flood was Noah’s flood.

NO BLINDING SUNLIGHT: The water vapor would have deflected the light from the sun and the earth would have experienced what we call today “indirect lighting.”[18] This may have provided light long after the sun went down and the deflection of light could have provided beautiful skies, perhaps similar to that of the aurora borealis (northern lights). Scientists confirm that stars give off light that is in every color of the rainbow. The vapor bubble might have permitted the people on earth to see the colors of the night sky in their original beauty thus the sky of the first world may have resembled a brightly colored fire works on the Fourth of July.

MEN AND ANIMALS WERE VEGETARIANS: Evidently meat was not considered appropriate food for animals or man until after the flood. In Genesis 1:29, 30, God said that He gave plants and fruit for food for both men and animals. In Genesis 9:3, God told Noah, AFTER the flood, that, “Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything.” Although the eating habits of animals are not mentioned in Genesis 9:3, I believe that animals were included when God gave this freedom to eat meat. It is obvious that, today, most animals do eat meat. A conclusion that we may draw is that, before the flood, animals did not kill people in order to eat them.

ANIMALS WERE TAME: In Genesis 1:28, God said that man could rule over all living things. It is true that this could be a conquered ruler ship, however, it could also imply that the animals willingly submitted themselves to the rule of men. In Genesis 2:18, 19 we learn that all the animals came before Adam and he named them. There is no indication that Adam feared for his life or that the animals were unwilling to corporate. In Genesis 3:2 Eve talked to the serpent and apparently she had no fear. In Genesis 6:19 Noah was commanded to bring every living creature into the ark. Again, there is no indication that this was a dangerous job or that some animals refused to follow his directions. In Genesis 9:2 we find that AFTER the flood, God first put the fear of man in the animals. I believe that all of this points to the strong possibility that animals were tame before the flood.

MEN WERE VERY WISE: I think it was Albert Einstein who suggested that men, today, use no more than one-tenth of their brain capacity. Isn’t it interesting that if a man today lived to be ninety years old, he would be just one-tenth of the average age of the people that lived before the flood? If man could remain mentally young for nine hundred years, imagine how much knowledge he could gain. With many, many, other elderly people living near them; they would have access to vast amounts of wisdom. This wisdom could be compared only to the huge computers of today.

ONE LANGUAGE: Before the Genesis flood and up to the building of the tower of Babel, all men spoke the same language (Genesis 11:6). A one-world language would have been a great asset in the sharing of wisdom and the building of a modernized society.

HUGE POPULATION: Doctor Ed Wheat, in his “Sex Problems in Marriage” tapes, said that at puberty young women have over 10,000 ovum. In other words, women have the potential of delivering 10,000 children. People also have the potential of parenting children long after they have reached the age of 50. Abraham was 100 years old and Sarah was 90 when she gave birth to Isaac (Genesis 17:17). Some of the generations listed in Genesis 5 were at least 165 years apart. This shows that some of the parents were at least 165 years old when their children were born. Noah fathered Shem, Ham and Japheth after he was 500 years old (Genesis 5:32). If, before the flood, the generations were 93 years apart, and each family had only six children, there would have been 137 billion people on the earth by the time of Noah.[19] It is interesting to compare this figure to today’s population of just over five billion. Without doubt, the generations were much closer than 93 years and families had far more than 6 children per family.

Consider what a huge population the world would have had if each family had 100 children.

MORE LAND MASS: May I remind you that nearly three-fourths of the earth’s surface, today, is covered by water. But before the flood, most of the earth’s surface was probably dry land. The extra dry land would have been necessary for the huge population that existed in the first world. In Genesis 5:11, 13 the Bible indicates twice, that BEFORE the Genesis flood, the earth was FILLED with people.

SUMMARY: Now let us summarize the ideas presented in this chapter and, as we do, please allow your imagination to work with me. Consider what a wonderful place the world would have been before the flood destroyed it. It seems that God gave man no long list of laws to keep but He gave man freedom to do as he pleased. Evidently, there was no sickness and only a very few deaths. It is awesome to think of the vast amounts of wisdom that our forefathers could store in their computer-like brains. The natural result of that wisdom would be conveniences that were probably so advanced that; by contrast, people today would look like cave men. Think about the huge, tame animals and the great structures that man could have built, like Noah’s ark, with the aid of tame dinosaurs. If tame birds had wing spans of 25 feet, what do you think people would have done with them? How thrilling it would be to literally fly on the wings of a bird.
Think about the perfect year-round temperature. How great it would be to never have windstorms or devastating floods. People would never have needed sunglasses for the sunlight would never have been glaring.

Juan Ponce de Leon searched in vain for the fountain of youth. Millions of dollars are spent each year so that we can look young, but in the first world the people enjoyed perpetual youth. Imagine the thrill of a little girl playing hop-scotch with her great, great, great grandmother. Yes, they could be genuine companions for the grandmother would be nearly as youthful as her granddaughter. Imagine how wonderful it would be to never have wrinkles, gray hair, bad eyesight, poor teeth, or rheumatism. Imagine the beauty of the voices of the elderly. They would be able to sing like teenagers.

Think about the tropical paradise with its beautiful flowers and birds. Imagine butterflies, as beautiful as they are today, having a wing span of 20 inches or more.

Think again of all the wisdom, conveniences and beauty of the first world, and then add to this picture the fact that at one time, in the coolness of the evening, God actually walked and talked with man (Genesis 3:8).

I think that most of us would say that we would be happy and we would live godly lives if we had it as nice as the people did in that first world. The sad part of our story comes when we note that the people before the flood were not happy. Instead, the Bible says that the first world was FILLED with violence (Genesis 6:13). As a consequence of their wickedness, God was compelled to destroy all but eight of the people and the beautiful world in which they lived.

There are several applications to our lives that we need to make at this point.

·        Paradise, like beauty, is in the eyes of the beholder.

·        The grass is not always greener on the other side of the flood.

·        Our happiness is more determined by the material that we are made of than the environment in which we live. The very same fire that melts wax hardens clay.

·        If we honor God, He will bless us.

·        If we devote ourselves to wickedness, God will destroy us.

·        The penalty for not studying history is that we have to relive the bad parts.

·        The best thing that we can do for ourselves and our families is to love and obey our God.

·        We can know that there is a God in heaven and that the Bible is His word.
